Welcome to BackUpScale: The Journey Begins!

banner

Hello everyone,

I am thrilled to announce that development on BackUpScale has resumed in earnest after a couple of years of being on hold. This marks the first blog post on backupscale.com, and I couldn’t be more excited to share the progress and plans with all of you.

The Journey So Far

BackUpScale started as a prototype a couple of years ago. The initial goal was to create an end-to-end secure backup solution with Restic at the core and append-only backups for ransomware protection. Despite the early promise, the project had to be shelved due to other pressing priorities. However, during this period, the prototype continued running, and we’ve been collecting valuable feedback from early users.

Learning and Growing

Thanks to the prototype and the community’s input, we’ve gathered a wealth of data that will shape the future of BackUpScale. This feedback has been instrumental in understanding what works, what needs improvement, and what features are most desired by our users.

The Road Ahead

With this knowledge in hand, we’re now ready to transition from a prototype to a scalable production system. The next phase will focus on building a robust infrastructure that can handle the demands of a growing user base and deliver the reliable backup solution you’ve been waiting for.

Supporting the Open-Source Community

At BackUpScale, we’re committed to supporting the open-source community by creating an open SaaS product. This product packages powerful open-source tools into a convenient service that prioritizes the best security practices (often difficult to implement individually) and optimal storage solutions for cost savings. By doing this, we save you the trouble of configuring and maintaining your own infrastructure and storage, allowing you to focus on what matters most to you, backing up your data, not developing zero-trust security models.

Get Involved

Please read the technical details and information on our Restic-as-a-service implementation. Your understanding and feedback are vital as we move forward.

To ensure that BackUpScale evolves in a way that best serves the community, your continued engagement is crucial. We’ve created several social communities where you can stay updated, provide feedback, and connect with other users. Check out the community page for links to our newsletter, social networks, Reddit community, and Matrix chat room.

A Hosted Version of Restic

One of the most exciting aspects of BackUpScale is offering a hosted version of Restic, something the community has been eagerly anticipating. We’re finally making this a reality, and we can’t wait for you to experience the convenience and reliability of our hosted solution.

Thank you for your patience and support. Let’s embark on this journey together and build something amazing. Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to scale your backups with BackUpScale!

Best regards,

Colan Schwartz
